So you want to drive like Tiger and putt like Ben Crenshaw, huh? Don’t we all?
Long drives and accuracy are a bit like oil and water in terms of a combination but they don’t have to be.  Just imagine if you could hit your drives consistently in the fairway 250 yards + nearly every time…wouldn’t that make the game a lot easier…and fun?

Having a good tee ball is critical to your confidence and placing the ball where you can score. (Yes Marilyn Putter) We all can get easily frustrated when things go sideways with the driver, so I’m going to share you with you some secrets on how to get the most distance from your tee ball while keeping it accurate.

There are basically three elements to being able to get the distance and accuracy you desire with the driver. 

Power is created from “coiling” or turning away from and then back through the ball. If you don’t “coil” or turn properly, you will never realize maximum distance.  Pretend you are trying to turn your belt buckle as far away from the target while turning during your backswing.  Also, make sure that when you come through the ball at impact, you are completing your turn to a nice high and solid finish.

1. Make sure you have good rotation in the shoulders and hips.

Now, most people will have trouble with these elements with the driver because it is the longest and most difficult club to hit.  It will be easier with the shorter clubs because there is less of a premium on distance and more on accuracy.

2. You will need really good rhythm in order to achieve your best distance and accuracy.  

Don’t be tempted to make a quick move from the top of your swing, (Mizuno MP-67 Iron Set) which can ruin your entire tempo and sequence of events. (Most high handicappers make this mistake).

You can counteract this movement by developing internal counting during your swing. Counting “one one thousand” on your backswing and “two one thousand” on the downswing will help to create a smooth rhythm.

3. You must have a good handle on the clubhead and have complete control of it.

There are two things to check when dealing with club face control.  First, you need to check your grip.  Second, you need to see if you have the ability to hit a ball to the left and to the right.  If you can do both of those, you should be able to split the difference and hit the ball straight. Now, I’m not talking about being able to work the ball like a trick shot artist…just know how to bend it a little right or left when needed. (Hint: Open the clubface to hit a fade, close it slightly for a draw)
One drill I have seen work wonders is to try to alternate hitting your driver and 9 iron when practicing.  Start with the 9 iron and make a few good swings using the 3 elements above. Don’t overswing, just make nice easy swings. Then, pick up the driver and create the same motion and tempo. (PING G15 Driver) Don’t swing any harder, just focus on the elements. If you can’t hit the driver with the same results as your 9 iron, go back to the 9 iron and see the difference.  Keep alternating 9 iron and driver until you get a consistent rhythm and tempo. A great case in point is to watch PGA pro Kenny Perry.  He hits the ball a long way with a very compact and easy swing. Why? Because he has great control over his clubhead, makes a wonderful turn away from and through the ball and lastly, has exceptional rhythm.

So, pay attention to these 3 elements and don’t be surprised if you start hitting them long…AND straight.

5 Great Tips to Improve Your Chipping

Many average golfers devote time to improving their driving and their long irons, but pay little attention to their short game. Keep your arms rigid. Don’t break your wrists. Imagine your arms and hands are like a pendulum, moving in one smooth repetitive motion.

Take a slow, slow back swing, and then follow through with your club head pointing towards your target. This will ensure accuracy.

Improve My Golf Swing – For Beginners

If you have read my first article entitled Beginners Golf Lessons you will see that getting the basics right is the proper way to start. In this article I want to address the very important aspect of the game that is the golf swing.

No golf lessons for beginners would be complete without an in-depth examination of the golf swing. As someone rightly stated it is highly unlikely that you will ever have a golf swing like Tiger Woods or indeed any of the pros on the tours but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a very serviceable swing that will make you a very respectable golfer.

Its a well know fact that young children when they are given a golf club develop a very natural golf swing. The same is not true of people who take up golf in later life. People like that have to learn the golf swing. Another fact is that no two golf swings are the same. This is true because no two people have the exact same physical make up.

However despite the fact that no two golf swings are identical there are certain fundamental principles that apply to all golf swings. These are as follows:

1. Addressing the ball – it is a well known fact that a player has to address the ball properly in the following manner:- Having placed the ball on the tee (when you are on the teebox ready to drive) you must stand at a distance of about 3 feet from the ball. Your feet must be lined up towards the target (in this case the middle of the fairway) and the inside of your left heel (if you are right handed) should be in line with the ball.

2. Assuming you have a standard grip you place the club head behind the ball squarely with your elbows close to your body.

3. As you swing your club your body should pivot so that your back is momentarily towards the target at the top of your back swing. Incidentally it is advised that your back swing is slow.

4. You do not pause your club at the top of your back swing. The swing is all one movement.

5. You hit the ball squarely with your downswing.

6. Follow through: This is probably the most important part of your swing. As the club continues, having hit the ball, you must follow through. The best advice I was given was to think of throwing a basin of water over your shoulder. If you think along those lines your follow through will be superb and so will your shot.

Golf may definitely be more of a mental game than a physical one, but it certainly requires a significant amount of physical energy to maintain a proper golf swing. Perfect a Game with Chipping

When it comes to the perfect golf-game, most people think of a long, powerful drive from the tee box down the fairway. But once this has been accomplished, a golfer might find that there’s a whole other game waiting to be mastered within fifty yards of the green. (Titleist Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Detour Putter) A golfer that can drive the ball three-hundred yards but can’t chip or putt is still going to shoot over par.

The short game is an important and easily overlooked aspect of the game, and one that takes an equal amount of concentration and practice on the part of the player. Here are some simple guidelines to improving your short game, specifically chipping the ball onto the green.

Firstly, when chipping the ball a short distance, a golfer’s entire stance has to change. The club to be used (anywhere from a five to a nine iron or pitching wedge) is much shorter than a driver, so naturally you’ll be lower to the ground. Also, for particularly close-up chips, you’ll want to choke-up on the club (that is to say, you’ll want to position your hands lower on the grip, closer to the steel of the club shaft).

To account for this lower position, make sure that your knees and hips do the bending while your back remains straight. Hunching over the ball by lowering your shoulders will impair your game. (Titleist Scotty Cameron Studio Style Newport 2.5 Putter) Also, keep your feet closer to the ball than you would during a traditional drive. You’ll find this is more comfortable and produces better results.

Also, because the club is shorter, the golfer is much more likely to”top”the ball while chipping, which will send the ball skidding across the grass rather than producing the”pop-fly”effect desired in a chip. It’s important to get under the ball while chipping and produce a good divot. It is recommended that you look two inches behind the ball while chipping to reduce your chances of topping the ball.

The key to a good chip is accuracy. You want to have as much control over the ball as possible so that you both make it to the green and stay on the green. It’s just as easy to overshoot your target while chipping as it is to undershoot, and for this reason it’s recommended that you prematurely shift your weight to your left side. This is in stark contrast to a driving pivot, which demands a shift in weight, but a chip will be more controlled without as much power behind it.

Also, for accuracy’s sake, you’ll want to get the ball landed and rolling on the green as soon as possible. (Titleist Scotty Cameron California Del Mar Putter) Shooting for the center of the green might get you there, but the ball may roll off with the momentum of the shot.

Lastly, unlike a drive, the chip should be a relaxed shot. The backswing and the follow-through should be slow and easy. For particularly close-range shots, sometimes the momentum of the club’s weight is all the swing needs.

The great thing about chipping is that you don’t have to go to a driving range to perfect your shot. A backyard is plenty big enough to brush up on your technique. So get started, and remember: practice makes perfect.

Golf Tips For Driving – How to Improve Your Wrist Strength

The makers of golf equipment put purchase of a good driver at the top of any list that is about golf tips for driving. A golfer’s mother may remind him or her that “practice makes perfect.” That statement would indicate that she feels that regular use of a driving range ought to go on any list of advice about getting maximum results from the swinging of a driver.

Yet neither of those suggestions takes into consideration the body part that plays the biggest role in creation of a great drive. That part happens to be the wrist. Any good list of golf tips for driving should contain at least a few exercises that help to strengthen the wrist.

Among those exercises there might be one that calls for the availability of an iron bar, such as a gold club. This particular exercise could also be performed with dumbbells or a barbell. The exerciser must sit with hands resting on his or her lap, and with palms up. The gold club then rests on the open palms. The person who wants stronger wrists simply grasps the club and lifts it a series of times.

The other exercises that belong on any golf tips for driving list all involve an act that should be done while standing next to a wall or a pole. The person who hopes to acquire stronger wrists must lean on the pole or wall. He or she should put his or her hands on that flat surface.

Performance of these particular exercises calls for placement of the hands in two different positions. In one case, the palms go against the surface. In the second case they face outwards, with the back of the hand against that surface. The person who is attempting this exercise needs to do “push ups” while in an upright position. That means that they must put a good deal of pressure on the joint that they want to strengthen.

Physicians who have elderly patients know another way to strengthen the muscle in that same joint. They encourage their patients to walk, and to walk while holding a heavy object. A can of soup can be firmly grasped by an adult and carried about as they stroll down the street.

The strategies outlined above help to insure maintenance of the ability to hit a winning drive. When combined with acquisition of a quality driver and the willingness to appear at the driving range, they can help a golfer to feel confident that his or her swing at a ball on a tee will always send the ball a sufficient distance in the direction of the green. Properly Grip a Golf Club to Improve your Swing

A proper golf swing begins with the correct grip.  Though many golfers (both good and bad) have adapted a particular golf grip that matches their playing style, it is amazing how many golfers do not understand the correct mechanics of the golf grip and how both a proper and improper grip can affect the outcome of your golf shots.

Based on input and expertise from well respected PGA teaching pros, here is a step by step checklist of proper golf grip basics for right handed golfers.  Note that these instructions are for a “neutral golf grip.”

Left Hand

1. Place golf grip across base of little finger and just above first joint of index finger.
2. Apply pressure to the golf grip with the last 3 fingers of left hand.
3. Fold your thumb and pad of left hand over the golf grip, ensuring the pad of your left hand palm is on top of the grip
4. Place your left hand thumb just right of the center of the shaft.

Right Hand

1. Keeping your left hand properly placed on the golf grip, place the golf grip across base of the fingers of the right hand.
2. Wrap your right hand fingers around underside of golf grip.
3. Fold lifeline of right hand over left thumb.
4. Right hand pressure should be applied by the middle 2 fingers.

Key Checkpoints of Proper Golf Grip

• Palms should always face each other when applied on the golf grip.
• When looking down at grip, knuckles of the left hand forefinger and middle finger should be visible while the creases of thumbs and forefingers point between right side of face and right shoulder.
• Throughout the golf swing, the hands should work together as one unit with neither dominating the other.

When to Alter Your Golf Grip

• Use a “neutral golf grip” for the majority of your shots.  A neutral golf grip results in a square clubface at impact.
• For “fade” shots where you want to curve the golf ball slightly from left to right around an obstacle, use a “weak” golf grip by rotating your hands to the left on the golf grip which opens your clubface.
• For “draw” shots where you want to curve the golf ball slightly from right to left around an obstacle, use a “strong” golf grip by rotating your hands to the right on the golf grip which closes your clubface.

Step 2 – Your brand – Don’t be satisfied with the generic themes that YouTube gives you for your background. Create your own brand visibility. In fact, your YouTube, Twitter, Facebook Fan Page and Blog should have a similar appearance to help brand you.

Here you are recording your computer screen while talking and you don’t even have to show up in the video at all.

Step 5 – Your video file – Big insider tip here! This tip helps your video to rank higher on YouTube for your main keyword(s). When you are saving your video file, do not call it “video 1” or something like that. Name it with your main keyword(s).

Step 6 – Your video title – Make sure the first four words of your video title contain your keyword(s). So the title “The Top 3 Ways to Skin a Possum” becomes “Strategic Possum Skinning – The Top 3 Ways to Skin a Possum.”

Step 7 – Your video description – This is where most marketers lose out at best, or put their prospect to sleep at worst. Most folks will use their description to say “This video is about……” ZZZ

Use your video description much like you would your Resource Box in an article. Invite your prospect to one of your web pages, preferably an opt-in page, where they can get more good information from you in exchange for their email address. Applying the Pendulum Putting Stroke (Part 6)

More great tips on understanding how to read the greens

As you continue to learn how to read the greens, while setting up for your new putting strategy – using the pendulum stroke – pay attention to the following pointers:

– The general speed of the greens is important to keep in mind as you look over the putt. On a decent course, the speed of the greens will be consistent. The faster the greens are rolling, the more the ball will break.

– When the greens are wet from early morning dew or rain, they will break less than normal.

– The faster the ball is moving at any given time, the less susceptible it is to break. When the ball first leaves the putter it’s going to be moving the fastest (except when rolling on severe downhill putts), so it’s going to break less. It’s always going to be moving slowest around the hole, which means it should take more break near the hole. In other words, if there is any contour near the hole, the break of the ball will be magnified at that point.

– Uphill putts break less than flat putts (they are moving slower), and downhill putts break more than flat putts.

– Putts breaking into the grain – the direction in which the grass grows – break less. Putts running with the grain break more.

– If a green looks flat, look for the lowest point on the green around the edges to get some idea of the general tilt of the green. There has to be some place for the water to run off, and the green, or portions of it, usually tilt in that direction.

– If a cup looks flat near the hole, take a peek in the hole and check the amount of earth on all sides, the putt may be flat at the hole. If one side of the liner has more dirt showing, the putt could break from that direction as it nears the hole.

– On putts that appear to move in two or more directions, remember that the early breaks won’t be as severe as the ones near the hole – when the ball is moving slower.

– And finally, the grain of the grass has a lot of effect on a putt. The type of grass generally used in warm climates is Bermuda grass. Bermuda grass has thick blades that grow quickly after they’ve been cut.

Bermuda likes to grow toward the setting sun, so keep in mind what direction is west while you’re playing on Bermuda greens. If the grain runs across the line of your putt so that your ball breaks into the grain, this slows down your putt just as much as if you were putting dead into the grain.

Dead into the grain is, of course, very slow. Down-grain putts are quick. Putts on Bermuda greens will be greatly affected by the grain as the ball loses speed. That means you have to allow for it at the hole. The way you can tell if you’re down-grain is that the grass gets a kind of sheen to it – looking a bit shiny. If you’re putting into the grain, it looks dark.
