When you learn to play the violin you will soon realize that there is no one exact violin stance or posture that everybody must adhere to as each person is born with a unique body that is different from others. A particular stance that works for one person may not work for another person.

This is something that you will have to personally experiment with. Try adopting many different violin subtle changes to your stances as you learn to play the violin and see which ones suit you best.

However, there are general rules for posture and stance that are recommended for people to follow. The core components of violin posture and stance are that you have a free sense of movement that feels comfortable and one that is well supported by a good centre of gravity and balance.

There are two main positions for playing the violin. These positions are sitting down on a relatively hard chair surface or standing up. When sitting down make sure the surface of the chair is hard otherwise your violin playing performance will be affected and your posture will be unbalanced and awkward.

It’s best to familiarize yourself with both sitting down and standing when playing the violin as both positions are very commonly used and called for. Generally long periods of playing the violin can call for the need to be seated while playing the violin.

When you are playing the violin sitting on a chair, imagine a straight line running from the top of your head, down through your body or along your back, all the way to the point where your buttocks meets the chair. As you play, keep this imaginary line straight as much as possible. It is important that you remain erect in your posture and not slouched over.

Although it is best to keep this imaginary line straight, be mindful not to become rigid or stiff with regards to your violin posture. Keep your posture relaxed and comfortable at all times when playing the violin. Also, do not lean back against the chair. Instead, adopt a comfortable position in the middle of the chair and extend one leg out further than the other leg for optimal performance and balance.

When you are playing the violin standing upright, keep your weight balanced between both legs. Many people find it useful to extend their left leg ever so slightly in front of their right leg but in a way that there is still equal balance over both legs. If your both legs are not equally balanced then your performance can become affected as the upper body movements will be hindered.

With regards to your upper body posture, have your shoulders slightly pulled back with your chest sticking forwards out ever so slightly. Remember to also keep your posture erect in a way that feels comfortable and natural to you.

Just remember as you learn to play the violin not to become rigid as you want to have sense of looseness in your movements. However, if you have an excessive amount of movements, you may find yourself having to readjust your grip to both the violin and the bow. All of these tips will start to become more natural as you progress through your violin lessons.
