Knowing how to grip a golf club correctly is critical for improving your game. Get this right and you have a chance of hitting a good shot but get it wrong and you are guaranteed to hit a poor shot.

There are 3 different ways to grip the club: overlapping, interlocking, and the baseball grip. They all work and which one you use is dependent on your personal preferences.

I’m not going to go into detail about each of those because there is plenty of information on the internet about them. However, they all have some commonalities that you need to master if you want to become a good player.

How to avoid a weak grip…

Be certain to hold the club in your fingers with both hands. Also make sure the V formed by the gap between your thumb and index is pointing towards your back shoulder and that at least 3 knuckles of your top hand are visible.

If either of these elements are out of whack than your grip isn’t strong enough and you will constantly struggle with slicing the ball.

The most CRITICAL part of the grip

The most important thing to remember is to hold the golf club very lightly. Most players hold it far too tightly and the result is, they have a lot of tension in the swing which hampers them from swinging loose and freely.

You’d be amazed at how much the hands really control the tension level of the whole body. The lighter you hold the club the more relaxed you will feel.

Obviously you don’t want to hold the club so loose that it wobbles around but you also don’t want to have it too tight. If you error be sure to do so on the side of being too loose as opposed to too tense. This is how to grip a golf club properly and ensure the foundation of your swing is intact.
